Homebrew

Brew magic, serve chaos, pay the rent. A tavern game set in the same world as The Tower of Allura.

The story

The Shadowed Grove

Lunestra is a pink tiefling and the only Magimixologist in Alyrmin. Her tavern sits in the roots of the Shadowed Grove, where coffee is served until five and the cocktails start pouring after. Precious, the orc cook, runs the kitchen and calls everyone sweetpea. Lord Menorialis collects the rent every night, and it goes up every day. Across the street, an elvish wine bar would love nothing more than for the Grove to close.

Each day is one shift from 6am to 2am. Earn gold, keep your reputation up and keep chaos from boiling over. You have 3 hearts: lose one if the tavern boils over or the rent comes up short. Every 7th day is a milestone with a twist.

Lunestra
Tiefling Magimixologist. You.
Precious
Orc cook. Calls everyone sweetpea.
Lord Menorialis
Landlord, spellcaster, hat enthusiast.
Eggy
Impling. Brings supplies and bad news.
How to play

Behind the bar

  • Take orders from seated guests, then pour the base, add up to two infusions and finish at the right station.
  • Her tail holds one extra item. Press Q to swap what is in her hands with what is on her tail.
  • Stations: Brew Pot (4s, collect it before it spoils), Shaker (hold to shake), Enchanting Circle (5s, collect it before it spoils).
  • Precious cooks food orders. Ring up the order at the kitchen, then carry plates out before they go cold.
  • Messes raise chaos. Hold Use to clean, cast Tidy to clean everything at once or Calm to settle the room.
  • Travelers check in at the desk and pay for their room when they leave. Clean the room after them. If every room is taken, you can turn them away politely at the desk: no rent, but no hard feelings either.
  • Miscasts happen when a drink goes wrong. Sometimes the guest loves being a frog. Usually not.
  • Infusions do things when the drink is right: Moonpetal calms the guests around them, Emberroot hurries them along, Fizzwisp makes them float and tip more, Frostmint cools a dragonborn, and Gloomberry loosens lips.

Keyboard: WASD to move, E or Space to use, Q to swap, 1 Tidy, 2 Calm, Esc for the recipe book. Touch controls appear on phones.

Who walks in

The guests

  • Elf
Snobbish slow sippers who hate a mess and tip well for a perfect drink.
Patient · Big tips · Lingers
  • Dwarf
Loud, thirsty and quick. They drink fast and spill more than they drink.
Impatient · Fair tips · Quick visits
  • Halfling
Second breakfast, then elevenses. Small tips, but they always order food.
Impatient · Small tips · Stays a while
  • Orc · from day 2
Friendly as anything, but chairs were not made for them.
Average patience · Big tips · Stays a while
  • Gnome · from day 3
Cannot stop tinkering. Their gadgets go off at the worst moments.
Average patience · Fair tips · Lingers
  • Dragonborn · from day 4
They breathe fire when they laugh. Anything with Frostmint keeps the bar standing.
Average patience · Big tips · Stays a while
  • Skeleton · from day 5
Endlessly patient and never complain. Every drink pours straight through them, so keep a mop handy.
Patient · Small tips · Lingers
  • Fairy · from day 6
Tiny, impatient and they pay in gemdust. A miscast offends them so badly they leave on the spot.
Impatient · Big tips · Quick visits
  • Centaur · from day 8
Far too big for a chair: a centaur takes a whole table to themselves. Big appetites, big tips.
Average patience · Big tips · Stays a while
What they came for

Any species can turn up as any of these.

  • Patrons · from day 1 Most of your custom. Sit down, order a drink and maybe food, pay, and go.
  • Travelers · from day 1 Want a room, not a seat. Check them in at the front desk and they pay rent when they check out (leaving the bed a wreck). Full up? Turn them away politely.
  • Adventurers · from day 2 Carry a pack. Gossip about quests, pin new ones to the notice board, and will take a quest note you hand them. Messier than most.
  • Regulars · from day 2 Always order "the usual", wait longer than anyone, and tip a third more.
  • Brawlers · from day 3 Red headband, rolled sleeves. Once fed they pick a fight with whoever is nearest, unless their drink had Moonpetal in it.
  • Bards · from day 3 Carry a lute. Drink for free, then play, and the whole room waits more patiently while they stay twice as long.
  • Critics · from day 4 Top hat and monocle. A perfect drink lifts your reputation a lot; a miscast or a walk-out sinks it.
Special guests
  • Returning heroes are adventurers you sent on a quest, walking back in with loot (or a story) on the day they are due.
  • Werewolves appear after 8pm on a full moon. They are hard on the furniture, and a broken chair is likely when they leave.
  • Frogs are guests who got the wrong drink. It wears off. Usually.
When it all goes wrong

Trouble

  • Bar fight! · from day 2
Hold E on the brawl to break it up, or cast Calm.
  • An owlbear cub got in! · from day 3
Catch it with E before it trashes the place.
  • A gnome gadget is ticking! · from day 3
Hold E on it to defuse it before it blows.
  • A ghost drifts in! · from day 5, after dark
Offer it any drink with Moonpetal, or cast Calm.
  • Something is hungry... · from day 6
Find the mimic and feed it a drink or a plate.

Each one has a timer. Leave it too long and it goes off on its own, which is always worse. Later on they start to overlap.

Rumors, quests and secrets

The notice board

Guests gossip on their way out, and everything they say goes in Lunestra's rumor journal. Adventurers talk about quests, which go up on the notice board on the east wall. Take a note down and hand it to an adventurer: you pay for their supplies out of the day's takings, and a few days later they walk back in with loot, a trophy for the wall, or at least a story.

  • The Goblin Toll Bridge · 20g supplies, 1 day, 85% odds
  • The Sunken Crypt · 30g supplies, 1 day, 80% odds
  • Return the Owlbear Cub · 25g supplies, 1 day, 75% odds, trophy: Owlbear Plush
  • The Singing Mushrooms · 35g supplies, 2 days, 70% odds, trophy: Singing Mushroom
  • The Legend of the Golden Mop · 50g supplies, 2 days, 55% odds, trophy: The Golden Mop
  • The Wyvern of Hollow Peak · 60g supplies, 2 days, 60% odds, trophy: Wyvern Skull
  • Floor Thirty of the Tower · 80g supplies, 3 days, 50% odds, trophy: Noxiarium Shard
  • The Lich of Bramblemoor · 100g supplies, 3 days, 40% odds, trophy: Crown of the Lich

There are also 6 secret recipes that are not on any menu. Guests drop hints, especially after a Gloomberry drink. Mix the exact combination and serve it, and it goes in the book for good.

Keeping the place running

The cellar, the landlord and the rival

  • The cellar. Every pour and every pinch of infusion comes off the shelves, and a thin gauge under each one shows what is left. Buy crates of 10each morning; prices creep up as the days go by. The forecast tells you what today's crowd will want.
  • Eggy, an impling, brings an emergency delivery if a shelf runs dry mid-shift: a few servings at 2x the price, and some bad news.
  • Lord Menorialis drops in once a day to admire his building. He is all talk and no demands, but he will notice a scorch mark.
  • The wine bar across the street takes in about 35% of the guests who storm out of yours. Word spreads: up to 20% fewer customers for a day or two afterwards.
  • The leaderboard ranks taverns by days survived, then gold earned. Sign in to the site and your best run is saved.
Every seventh day

Milestone days

  • Day 7: Bralene's Festival. The festival of Bralene, goddess of celebration, spirits and festivals. All of Alyrmin is out, spirits sell for more, and Deon never misses it. Make it to last call for a festival purse. Purse: 120g.
  • Day 14: The Royal Inspection. The Queen's inspector is in town with a flock of critics. Every guest minds a mess like an elf. Purse: 160g.
  • Day 21: The Necromancer Convention. The necromancers are in town, and they brought their friends. Their bony, leaky friends. Purse: 180g.
  • Day 28: The Hunter's Moon. A full moon tonight. After dark some guests get very hairy: they tip big and break chairs. Purse: 200g.

Then round again, every seven days, for as long as the tavern stands.

Growing the Grove

The big upgrades add whole new spaces, and once the tavern is bigger than the screen the view follows Lunestra. Arrows at the edge of the screen point to trouble and waiting guests out of sight.

  • The Patio out front seats twelve under parasols. It does most of its trade by day, packs out in a heatwave, and shuts when it rains. Guests now come in from the street.
  • The Stage Room to the west: a bard who loves their drink goes up and plays. Everyone waits more patiently, and the tip jar pays out when the set ends. Grukka keeps an eye on the show.
  • The Dining Room to the east has four long tables for parties of up to four, and Precious sends its plates to its own hatch. Bramble works it.
  • The Guest Wing runs along the loft above the dining room: rooms 4 and 5, then 6 and 7, then the Lord's Suite, which rents for double. Wisp keeps house up there.
Familiar faces

From day 3, now and then the next guest through the door is someone you know: the Campaign 3 party from Prestige Encounters, and two heroes of Campaign 2 passing through. Each comes at most once a day.

  • Diablo. A luchador monk. Served, he challenges the next table to an arm-wrestle, and everyone nearby cheers up.
  • Valerie. A changeling bard with a red fan. Plays for the room like any bard, and her songs are something else.
  • Percy. A dhampir cleric of Nexus, goddess of the void. Evenings only, and always wine. Served, the void quietly takes one mess from the tavern.
  • Craumgacu. A warforged sorcerer. Does not drink, but only orders enchanted drinks, for the sensation.
  • RoZaad. A hobgoblin rogue. Watch the tip jar when he leaves, unless Grukka is on the door.
  • Naoki. A tiefling druid who works with Aspen and Astra's groves. Tips in reagents: a few Moonpetal for the shelf.
  • Thalia. A ranger. Pays extra for every drink: there is always a boar out back for Precious.
  • Emelyne. A necromancer, and a morally grey one. Her skeleton tidies messes near her table, but the living guests nearby do not love it.
  • Sanasha. A barbarian who starts fights, and ends them: any brawl in the room, she breaks up herself.
  • Renatus. An echo knight and warlock. His echo takes its own seat and orders its own drink.
  • Pudhak (Campaign 2). A goliath paladin turned world traveler, back from the far side of the world. Takes the best room, and sometimes his friend, a solar dragon, lands on the patio. The crowd comes running.
  • Deon (Campaign 2). A wanderer and a devotee of Bralene, goddess of celebration, spirits and festivals. Only drinks spirits, toasts her every time (the guests around him cheer), and never misses her festival.

Build the Shrine of the Flame and you can leave a morning offering (10g) to one of the Campaign 2 heroes who became gods of the Flame, or to Bralene:

  • Casmir (God of protection, boundaries and wards): The first trouble of the day never gets through the door.
  • Revalor (God of retribution, wanderers and stealth (Cormac)): More travelers find their way here, and a brawler who starts a fight pays for it.
  • Kydro (God of transformation, ambition and elements): Pots, shaker and circle all work 20% faster.
  • Torra (God of discovery, performers and trickery): Chaos settles 25% faster, and a guest lets slip a secret recipe.
  • Bralene (Goddess of celebration, spirits and festivals): Spirits sell for 30% more, and a few more guests come to celebrate.

And keep an eye on the notice board: Nazmir is still missing. Adventurers back from the road sometimes bring word of him.

Staff

As the tavern grows, Lunestra can take on help. Each hire costs a fee up front and a wage every night, paid with the rent, rising a little each day. Let anyone go from the ledger.

  • Tamsin, gnome barkeep. Comes with your first expansion, to mind the bar while you are out in the new rooms. She takes orders and makes drinks for the guests at the bar stools only, so the two of you never make the same drink. Wage from 14g a night.
  • Bramble, halfling runner. A halfling runner for the bigger floor. Carries plates from Precious's window, two at a time. Needs Another Table or Standing Tables first. Wage from 14g a night.
  • Grukka, half-orc bouncer. A half-orc bouncer. Walks over to any bar fight and ends it on the spot, and catches owlbear cubs. Wage from 18g a night.
  • Wisp, fairy housekeeper. A fairy housekeeper for the loft. Flies over the furniture, makes beds twice as fast, and (slowly) mends broken chairs and scrubs scorch marks. Needs Third Guest Room first. Wage from 14g a night.
  • The broom golem works for free from day one, sweeping up spills on its own. Golem Polish makes it twice as quick.
