Backstory

Emelyne Norna Pyreweaver comes from a small family, only consisting of an older sister and her parents. It didn’t start this small though. After the events that freed the flame of creation, their moderately-sized town was ravished by economic and emotional depression, followed by famine and fearful violence. The Pyreweaver family line, before these struggles, operated mostly as night watchmen, protecting the streets in the night and lighting torches and pyres to fight back the shadows. However, the deterioration of the town led to waves of people falling dead, with survivors hopeless and without divine guidance.

With the build-up of the fallen, the Pyreweavers found themselves burying the many unclaimed, rotting bodies they’d find through the night. The cemetery and eventual body-burning pits fell under the control of the family, giving a crude irony to their surname. Emelyne’s grandmother refused to leave, while some branches of the family left to try and find a safer city. They couldn’t have known that everyone was suffering.

By the time Emelyne was born, the city had rebuilt itself! At least, a portion of it. While the inner city is bustling with activity and invention, it is only a fraction of the size it used to be. Growing up, she heard many stories of the days before the changes, but her own mother and father chose to embrace the new progressions instead of reminiscing on the past. They continued in the easiest business they had at the time; mortuary work.

The stories she heard came most from the elders of the city center, who would rant and rave about the good ol’ days over a pint or ten. She found them to be flimsy fantasy before she had discovered her late grandparents’ journals. They recounted spells and materials, and contained drawings of mystical diagrams. Emelyne was hooked. She began practicing, haggling with other kids in the streets and using the spare “parts” from the family business in her pursuit of the knowledge left behind by her parents.

She was eventually caught though, and after many discussions with her invention-leaning parents, she convinced them to let her practice and eventually, to help her enter the Mages Guild, to further her learning. She is an entirely curious human, finding morbid fascination with the intermingling of death and magic. She is not squeamish, sympathetic but not empathic, and she finds her pursuit of becoming a great magic wielder the most important. She wishes endlessly to one up and outdo her sister, although her sister barely thinks of Emelyne, seeing as to how she is constantly tinkering with new burial technology.

As of the current events of the campaign, Emelyne doesn't remember her sister Robyn, from an exchange she ended up making.
