The Weight of One Life
The Veiled Vanguard battles a relentless celestial creature, culminating in Valerie’s heartbreaking sacrifice to save Emelyne. As the party reels from her death, an ancient entity offers Emelyne a chance to bring her back. Guided to a newly risen temple, they meet Casmir, God of Barriers, who entrusts them with a trial that will test not just their strength, but the choices that define their fate.
The mutated coyote mother attacked the Veiled Vanguard in a furious humanoid form, blasting Emelyne with radiant energy and striking Valerie while emitting a bewildering psychic aura that penalized the party's saves. Thalia landed a critical blow with her longsword, but the creature retaliated, crushing her chest and dropping her before Naoki revived her. Emelyne was brutally downed next, prompting a hesitant Valerie to cast a powerful Healing Word to bring her back. Demanding a life for a life, the beast seized Emelyne by the neck. When Valerie and Thalia adamantly refused the trade, the creature dropped Emelyne and redirected its full fury at Valerie, relentlessly shattering her Mirror Images. Breaking through her final illusion, the creature struck Valerie down and stabbed her through the chest with a bladed hand. Whispering her final words to Emelyne—apologizing for failing to protect her—Valerie died, her form shifting back into her true pale changeling shape as Null. A second entity stayed the mother's hand, declaring a life had been paid, and both departed. Grief-stricken and inconsolable, Emelyne cast Gentle Repose over Valerie's body while Naoki placed a single purple rose on her chest. Loading her onto a Schnoggle, the Vanguard journeyed through the night and rested during the scorching daylight. That evening, Emelyne cast Speak with Dead; Valerie's spirit could only reveal that she was in a dark, frightening place and last remembered failing to protect Emelyne. As the spell ended, a red light flared in Valerie's eyes as the entity from beneath Rubealon spoke through her corpse, offering Emelyne a way to bring Valerie back.
The red light faded as two massive pillars and the prophesied temple rose from the sand. Casmir, God of Barriers, manifested before them in the Flame of Creation. Calling them the Veiled Vanguard, Casmir explained that his ancient Edicts were created to protect the mortal realm from greater beings, though at great personal cost. Emelyne warned him of the approaching comet prophesied to break the veil, but Casmir admitted the gods were not omniscient and urged caution when interpreting prophecies. He revealed that a higher power had directed the party here to face one of his ancient trials—a test without a key, requiring only that they be in the right place at the right time to prove themselves worthy of shaping the world's fate. Reflecting that good and evil are subjective choices made every day, Casmir ushered them toward the gateway.
Stepping through the threshold, the party's vision flashed white as the desert vanished, replacing the wasteland with a dense jungle. After unsuccessful attempts by Emelyne, Naoki, Craum, and Thalia to navigate the flora or track their surroundings, Craum summoned Bitty, who located a set of stone stairs leading up a pyramid-like structure. Carrying Valerie's body and Bitty, the Veiled Vanguard ascended into the unknown temple.
